CHNGE Program Components:

  • Cognitive Programming – Problem-Solving Skills in Action:
We are interested in incorporating Problem-Solving Skills in Action as our main cognitive-behavioral component due to its structured approach to enhancing decision-making and fostering prosocial behavior. Based on my experience with the DETOUR model in transitional centers, I am confident that this program can effectively equip youth with the necessary tools to make positive life choices. The programming solution needs to be short-term but effective.

  • Community Policing and Engagement:
In collaboration with the Pelham and Camilla Police Departments, as well as the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, we are promoting a community policing model that strengthens trust between youth and law enforcement. Events like National Night Out and the STYLE program will be central to this effort, fostering positive interactions and community cohesion.

  • Educational and Vocational Training:
We have a strong educational component that includes tutoring, literacy support, and vocational training. These services, led by experienced educators, aim to enhance academic skills and prepare participants for employment, thus providing practical alternatives to gang involvement.

  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Support:
To address the mental health needs of our participants, we are partnering with a local provider to offer comprehensive behavioral health services, including substance abuse counseling facilitated by a licensed counselor. This support is critical to helping participants develop healthier coping strategies and reduce risky behaviors.

  • Recreational Activities:
Recreational programs will include sports clinics, arts activities, and community events, all of which serve as engaging alternatives to gang involvement. These activities promote teamwork, build confidence, and encourage a sense of belonging within the community.

  • Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns:
We are also focused on community-wide awareness initiatives that will educate families, local organizations, and residents about gang prevention and available resources. By involving the community, we aim to create a support network that reinforces the program’s objectives.

  • Mentoring and Life Coaching:
Through partnerships with trained mentors and certified life coaches, the CHNGE initiative offers personalized guidance and support to participants. Mentors provide one-on-one interactions, helping youth develop essential life skills, set personal goals, and build resilience. Life coaches lead workshops and conduct sessions designed to empower participants, reinforce positive behaviors, and support them in navigating life’s challenges. I have reached out to the Georgia DJJ to have their staff train our volunteers and partners in how to interact with youth, mentoring, volunteerism, adolescent brain development, and trauma.
